Music which delves the mysteries of the human psyche and the wonder of love as Valentine’s Day approaches is featured this morning. Robert Schumann composed his Kreisleriana in a mere three days, writing to his beloved Clara, “I'm overflowing with music and beautiful melodies now –You and one of your ideas play the main role in it, and I want to dedicate it to you – yes, to you and nobody else – and then you will smile so sweetly when you discover yourself in it.” Then, he dedicated the piece to Frederic Chopin. No matter. The work is rooted in the fantastical fiction of E.T.A. Hoffman, and Schumann attributed distinct aspects of his own creativity to a cast of imaginary characters, including the fiery Florestan and the introspective Eusebius.
Elsewhere, the Catalan composer Xavier Montsalvatge penned his charming Divagación (Digression) as a wedding gift to the pianist Alicia de Larrocha, and the Choir reminds us in Latin of the need to give love in order to receive it. Read on for more details and stay tuned for spoken introductions.
