Backpack Drive

Sponsor a Backpack, now through January 29
This is the time of the school year when those inexpensive backpacks bought last fall are now frayed and falling apart.

That's why the Hunger & Homelessness team is holding a backpack drive to support Next Generation Youth Services. How can you help? SPONSOR a backpack - $40 buys a backpack; smaller amounts help us purchase supplies. Stop by our table to WRITE a note of encouragement - we will add a note to each backpack. Then come help us STUFF the backpacks on Sun Feb 5 during the morning Religious Exploration program. Questions? Contact: Kathleen Kiernan (kathleenpkiernan@gmail.com). Click here to see our backpack drive flyer.

HOPE as Your MLK Day of Service

Mon Jan 16, 10:00am-2:00pm, CUUC Kitchen
MLK Day is traditionally a time for service to the community. Why not help by joining our Meals for HOPE cooking team? Each week, they put our congregation's mission into action by preparing meal trays that we deliver to feed our neighbors at HOPE Community Services and the Open Arms shelter.

Kids Clothing Drive
through January 20

The Reproductive Justice and Hunger and Homelessness Social Justice teams are collecting gently used clothing for infants, children, and teens (newborn–18) to be distributed to local families in need through 914Cares.

Three Ways You Can Help:
1) Donate items. There will be donation boxes in the CUUC lobby for:
    * Gently used clothes for infants, children, and teens (ages newborn-18);
    * New socks and underwear for children and teens; and
    * New or gently used sneakers for children and teens.
2) Conduct a mini-drive. Ask your friends, neighbors, and classmates if they have items they can donate. Click here for a flyer to share. Contact Terri or Carolyn if you need help transporting donations to CUUC.
3) Help sort clothing for donation to 914Cares. We will be sorting and bagging clothes at CUUC on Sat Jan 21, 10am-2pm. Other dates may be added as needed. Stay tuned for more info and a sign-up sheet for sorting times. RE families are especially encouraged to help!
Read about 914Cares. Contacts: Terri Kung (madterri@gmail.com) or Carolyn Hanson (carolynhanson77@gmail.com) for more information.

Religious Exploration
1st-12th Grade
Social Justice Program

Room 41 in the green hallway
Tracy B, Carolyn H, Max T, and Stevie C will lead a program focused on working for change. We will talk about justice making as a spiritual practice, learn about the 1963 Children's Crusade in Birmingham as well as UU activists, and identify ways we can change the world, walking in the footsteps of change makers who came before.  If we have a big group, we shift to one group for children and another for youth.

10:00am Worship
In Person and Online

“Only Love” ~ Rev. Meredith Garmon

For Martin Luther King Day, we remember that he articulated a truth that our hearts have always known, though, in our fears and insecurities we sometimes forget: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Community

Wanted: Recruits for Reconciliation

Learn more at the COM Community Chat, Sun Jan 22, 11:30am, Fellowship Hall & Zoom 6161

The Committee on Ministry is initiating a new process for raising concerns, engaging in healthy conflict, and promoting reconciliation - and we need your help! We are asking congregants to nominate themselves or others for our Reconciliation Support Team. Skills in communication, mediation, and active listening are helpful but not required. RST members will be trained in our reconciliation process, and then be “on call” to help when conflicts arise. Click here to read our letter for details. Then come to the COM Community Chat after worship on Sun Jan 22 to learn more. Contact: Al Rocchi (alrocchi@verizon.net), Ginny Strand (vcs165@gmail.com).
Spring OWL Classes
Invite Friends & Help Publicize

This year, we are offering the Our Whole Lives (OWL) curriculum for 1st-9th graders and parents/caregivers. Our classes are open to the community and this curriculum is indispensable, supporting healthy decision making and self-esteem, understanding dynamics in relationships, affirming all sexual orientations and gender identities, and encouraging communication between parents and their children. We encourage you to spread the word.
The 8th-9th grade class is already underway. Coming up, the 1st-3rd grade class starts in January during Sunday morning RE. The 4th-5th, 6th-7th grade and parent/caregiver classes will be offered at CUUC over three Friday evenings, February 10, March 10, and April 14. The parent and caregiver class will include additional online dates to complete all twelve sessions. Classes are open to all who share the values of self-worth, health, responsibility and justice.

This is a great opportunity to invite friends and community members who are new to Unitarian Universalism and CUUC. Please help us advertise by sharing two pamphlets with friends, in your online groups, and elsewhere: Spring 2023 Sunday morning 1st-3rd grade class and family resources; and Friday evening 4th-5th, 6th-7th & Parent/Caregiver classes
