The miracle of Mozart, who would have turned 267 last Friday, is celebrated in this morning’s Gathering Music  and Postlude. The former features his prodigious variations on a popular children’s tune, then known in French as “Ah vous dirai-je, maman” but recognized by us as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. The latter highlights an instance of 18^th-century cultural appropriation, as Mozart parodies popular Ottoman Janissary music in his famous “Rondo alla Turca”.

 

This morning’s Offertory centers the musical culture of the African Diaspora in Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s setting of the Spiritual “The Angels Changed My Name”: “I went to the hillside, I went to pray; I know the angels done changed my name. Done changed my name for the coming day; thank God the angels done changed my name.”

The CUUC Choir is also on hand for two Anthems. Read on for programming details and stay tuned for spoken introductions.
