Long after he retired from the concert stage, Franz Liszt, purportedly music history's most electrifying piano virtuoso, took religious orders and turned towards more inwards spiritual reflection. His cycle of 12 piano works known as Weinnachtsbaum (The Christmas Tree) are dedicated to his granddaughter and frequently include his reworkings of Christmas carols from around the world.
