The passionate piano music of Robert and Clara Schumann seems to embody desire and longing. Robert was a piano student of Clara’s father, Friedrich Wieck, when he decided to make music his vocation rather than the carrier in law his family had envisioned for him. Clara, 9 years Robert’s junior, was one of Europe’s most brilliant child prodigies. Her father opposed the burgeoning romance between the two, and forbade them to continuing meeting. Throughout the 1830’s, Robert and Clara would correspond, sharing musical manuscripts which revealed a powerful mutual influence along with occasional hidden messages.
