Music: Sun Feb 13

Valentine’s Day finds musical expression in several of this morning’s solo piano selections. Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen (Scenes of Childhood) are a product of his years of yearning for the pianist Clara Wieck, whom he would eventually marry. He dedicated the cycle to her, alluding to it in the following letter: You once said to me that I often seemed like a child, and I suddenly got inspired and knocked off around 30 quaint little pieces... I selected several and titled them Kinderszenen. You will enjoy them, though you will need to forget that you are a virtuoso when you play them.

“Secreto” is taken from Federico Mompou’s Impresiones íntimas, his first published work. I encourage you to imagine what and between whom the secret might be….

This morning’s Interlude speaks to the Age of Reason. In fact, it may be one of the “reasonable” pieces ever written. Stay tuned to find out more in my spoken introduction, and read on for programming details.
