Music: Sun Nov 7

The music of Claude Debussy embodies our monthly theme of Wholeness in several respects. Debussy seemed especially open to embracing cultural diversity from all corners of the world, from the sultry echoes of Andalusia in La puerta del vino to the fun of American Vaudeville in "Golliwogg's Cakewalk". His vision extended beyond the material realm to the domain of water-nymphs in Ondine or the fantastical world of Breton mythology in La cathédrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral). From a technical point of view, his frequent references to the "whole-tone scale," in which the exclusive use of "whole steps" replaces the usual mixture of "whole" and "half steps" which usually define (and limit) tonal music. The music of Isaac Albéniz, Debussy's deeply admired colleague from Spain, rounds out the Gathering Music. Read on for programming details, and stay tuned for spoken introductions.
