Whether he was writing for the Church, royal patrons, or
musical amateurs, J. S. Bach frequently appended the initials S.D.G. to his
manuscripts. “Soli Deo Gloria”—To the Glory of God Alone—summarized Bach’s
conviction of the divine inspiration underlying all creative activity. And no
other composer’s music better reflects the Infinite, in its simultaneous linear
and harmonic unfolding. Accordingly, December’s theme of God is mirrored in the
solo keyboard works of Bach programmed at Sunday morning’s worship service.
